I can't believe that date when I type this. Where did all those years go.?? Remembering just this time last year we were ready to leave for our big adventure to Antarctica.

Since Open Studio in September (and a trip to Venice) I have been busy making some new pieces for a current exhibition, here in Somerton. Alternative Views.... and exhibition at ACE Arts at the old town hall in the center of town, with Vera Sheaf and Caroline Mornament. It runs from 7 January to the 4th of February the 4th February.
I am been reviewing my love of 'marks' in a new series called 'Marking Time'.
Some photos will follow soon.

On another note...... For personal family reasons, I have unfortunately had to cancel my teaching in May at Studio Preniac near Cahors, France. Liz provides a wonderful program of textile retreat workshops and I am sorry I can't take part this year.

All the best and thanks for reading......

After a gap of 45+ years I have just come back from a few days in Venice. It is a wonderful as I remembered. When I was an art college graduate, backpacking around Europe I stayed in a youth hostel on the Grand Canal. It was very different this time with my husband (of almost 40 years) and with possibly 50 times the number of tourists than was experienced before. (and that was mid October).
I have to say, despite having just experienced a cruise to Antarctica on a relatively small cruise ship, (400 people) I was shocked at the 4 enormous ships in dock - each probably with 4,000+ visitors overwhelming the main sites in Venice. There is a movement at the moment to stop this as it is affecting the foundations of many buildings nearby.
However, there are many places that are less crowded and it is great to just wander and discover secret places and restaurants for yourself. It was all so colourful and inspiring. Galleries are plenty for some of the best Renaissance art as well as some stunning very modern art collections. Here are some photos of Venice and our trip to Burano, a must if you are ever visiting.
Have you been tempted to self publish a book, but don't know where to start? If you have considered putting your photo images in book form there are many different online photo book companies available. I have considered using this as a 'one off' way to document inspiration, sketches and images of a series of work that I would want to present in a book. This might be great to show at an exhibition, and it might be substantial enough to take further with a number of copies. Mixbook.com is one such photo book company which features contemporary templates to follow and allows you ample space to write as much as you want. For a modest amount of money (and there are always 50% off sales) you can produce a book. It gives you a good idea the quality of your photography and it is amazing to see your work in print. Go into the website www.mixbook.com and see for yourself. I have used them twice recently, first for a small softcover square book, based on images of a trip to the Isle of Mull, primarily to see the quality of the printing, then a lovely hardcover 81/2"x11" landscape perfect bound publication about our Antarctic expedition.
Thrilled with both, I thought I would share them with you. I am tempted to do another based on my photos, images, sketches and stitched pieces based on the Somerset Levels. If anything it could focus one's attention on either self publishing a limited edition or finding an interested publisher.
Addressing the important principle of ‘Less is More’, we will explore exciting new approaches to simplifying our stitched textile work for a more dramatic effect.

During this workshop the aim is to create a variety of mixed media surfaces and imagery from a personal theme through a variety of techniques, processes and materials that include mono prints, and simple collagraph prints. Research material (photos or sketches if you have them) will be the starting point as we work through exercises to isolate line, shape, and texture, creating a variety of design and composition ideas. We will consider a more subtle use of colour - black and white, monochrome and neutrals with limited colour for dramatic impact. Imagery and writing on cloth will further enhance surface possibilities.

Several mixed media collages will be developed further, with machine and hand stitch added. Not news that is too old as this work is still being exhibited, around and about.
Truthfully, I have been very busy in the studio with work for several exhibitions this year and I haven't been actively sharing so much, but will try and change that soon.
These pieces are based on the Somerset Levels series and I still add new work to it. Although the sombre colours that reflected the flooding have been rejuvenated somewhat.
What's been happening?

Well.....
It has been a long time since I wrote and I really will try and keep this more up to date. It isn't as if I have been away or anything... just busy with this and that.
Briefly, what I have been up to.

January - a fabulous 'bucket list' experience on a cruise to Antarctica with 6 days on the White Continent. I have to say it was a dream come true... You know me - besotted by ice, glaciers, snow everywhere. Well... it was so inspiring! I will have images to work with, draw, paint and stitch for the rest of my life. And... the penguins were perfect as well.
Here is some recent work done for Art Textiles Made in Britain exhibition in August at the Festival of Quilts. The first 3 pieces are currently at the Forge Needle Museum in Reddich and the 5 will be seen when 'Concealed' exhibition goes to the Minerva Gallery, Llanidloes, Wales in May.

The last few months have been busy with sketches and paintings based on local landscapes, vistas from the A303 across the plains and valleys of Somerset and Wiltshire. This time the stitch paintings were started as monoprints and watercolour painted pictures. Transferring them onto cloth with stitch gave them new depth. Very colourful and lively for me. They have been fun and all were framed for Somerset Open Studios here in Somerton this year. It is always a great event and we had close to 300 visitors. Looking at these remind me of the colours in the Bocca area of Buenos Aires.... Maybe I brought the colour home with me.

Life has been busy - working with many textile projects that were interupted with a spate of colds, coughs and illness in the family. I was sorry to have to miss the recent opening of Quilt Art's Dialogue exhibition in Heidelberg at the end of March and could not attend, due to illness.
My piece for the exhibition is called Reality and Rhetoric and is 2.7m wide. The slats of transfered image hide the dialogue that reflects the history and economic life on the Somerset Levels, especially after the flooding of last year.

Back to my roots

When we moved to Somerton, we joined the Bruton Art Society which is a skilled group of painters who love all aspects of fine art, andwe can attend lectures, outdoor painting sessions and workshops. I recently did a workshop with Annette Burkitt an artist from Frome and we looked at Abstraction and Colour in the Landscape with reference to Gaugin and Kandinsky.

Well...
Getting a brush in my hand (except for painting paper and cloth for collage in stitched textiles) was wonderful to revisit. Especially using Gouache which I used for illustration when I worked in publishing, years ago. I had forgotten what a great medium it was. Vibrant yet forgiving.

The first day we took the painting by Gaugin called the Talisman and looked at colour and shape. This is not exactly like the original but I love how 'freeing' it was to just look at an artist's work for inspiration.

I have used this practise myself in textile teaching and really loved the experience of just giving myself over to another work of art.

Then, later we took our own inspiration and developed two paintings, again looking at the vibrance of colour, shapes and marks on the surface

Hills north of Somerton

Now I surprised myself at how colourful these paintings were. Not my usual pallett.

I am loving revisiting 'art' again and really want to do more painting - work, just for me. None of these will necessarily find their way into stitched textiles, but I am keen to explore so much more 'art' practice and really having fun.

So watch this space.... I'm busy filling sketchbooks now with new directions and will post more pictures soon.

I am writing blog entries on my new website, so for now, will try and do the same for entries for Art Space. Here is Day 1 and Day 2 so far if you are not a facebook viewer.
The first, current work based on the Somerset Level Flooding and the 2nd drawings and marks that inspired the Last Silence work as wall hung and 3D work. Watch this space for more entries.

On another note...
I am planning to offer short mini idea/workshop suggestions in future blogs. They will mostly include drawing, collage, and imagery for inspiration, art and stitch practise.
I know there is so much 'out there' online and not sure if there is a place for it, but feel that as I am always creating and filling sketchbooks as a starting point for my own work, it might be good to offer some suggestions for others who may not be able to take classes so regularly.

As mentioned - the ArtSpace (the same name) blog part of my new website will have up-to-date information and news and I eventually hope to introduce flip page mini workshop approaches in the future as well. Please keep an eye on the website www.sandrameech.com as well.

I hope you all had a good Christmas and we are now into 2015. Can't believe when I write that.

Life has been full since last writing. Open Studio for Somerset Art Works was successful, based here at my home gallery and studio with Vera Sheaf, a painter/printer friend from Somerton. It was fun to work small with framed pieces - all based on my new work about the flooded Somerset Levels last year. Please have a look at the New Work section on the website.

I have been busy working on new pieces for upcoming exhibitions this year at the Festival of Quilts, Bilston Hall, the Museum of Somerset, (Taunton) and especially Quilt Art's 30th anniversary Dialogues and Small Talk touring exhibitions.

A big change for me is creating and managing my own website at www.sandrameech.com
Please have a look. Even switching domain names (a challenge for a novice tech person like me), but very pleased I could do it.

I am really wanting to be more pro-active with this blog (there is also one on my new website) and hope to bring more news, views and mini work shop ideas to both sites in the future, so stay tuned.

Thanks for reading and will be in touch.
Life has been full and very busy this summer so apologies for not keeping up with the news.
I was happy to be invited to have a solo exhibition during July August and September at the Minerva Gallery in Llanidloes, Wales and it was super to see my Arctic and Beyond work all in one place.
The whole body of work began with my trip to Arctic Canada in 1998 to visit the Inuit seamstresses in Baker Lake. Seeing this textile did take me back to a wonderful inspirational trip. It created and interest in ice, snow, and glaciers that I continue to constantly revive.

I was also very pleased to have a solo exhibition at Midsomer Quilting, a wonderful shop, and gallery space in Chilcompton in Somerset. Worth a visit if you are in this part of the country. It also gave me an opportunity to see again some favourite pieces from the past.... some from the 'Within 4 Walls' series, and work done based on endangered trees and forests. It is always good to see the work done in the past to appreciate how one's work has evolved over the years. These are two pieces I hadn't seen for several years and they brought back wonderful memories. On the left a Scottish/Canadian piece and the right 'Remembering Cabot' from a visit to St. John's Nfld. to the Cabot Quilters group many years ago.

I can't forget the Festival of Quilts and I was busy there for several days, judging and helping on the Art Textiles Made in Britain stand. Our show was called 'Identity' and was very well received (if I do say so myself) I may have shared these photos, but here they are again.
You can see Louise Baldwin, Pauline Brown and Jenny Rolfe at the desk. A promising first venture for the group. My work in black and white inspired by an arctic walk and the sound of cracking ice.

The Latest news...
Taking a holiday in France in September was a chance to relax before the Somerset Open Studios.
I took part (with a painter, printmaker friend Vera Sheaf) in my home gallery/studio space for two weeks. It was my first venture and it was very interesting to meet non textile people. All of the work on show was new, smaller framed pieces based on the flooding earlier this year on the Somerset Levels. This is a theme that is developing into a larger body of work. Many of the smaller piece were developed from collographs that were manipulated, painted and finally transferred onto cloth for machine stitching.
What a winter we have had so far! You may have heard about the flooding in many parts of the UK. - Somerset, Gloucestershire, the Thames valley and Surrey. Somerton, where I live is on high ground, so no problems, but we are not far from 'the Somerset levels' where there has been terrific flooding since Christmas. Acres and acres of farmland are still underwater, some villages are cut off and it will take months (of reasonable spring weather ) for life to completely get back to normal. On the sunny days we have had, I have tried to capture the beauty of these flooded fields, while always remembering the damage that has been done.
So, why has it taken me so long to write another entry?? Well.... no excuse, except to say life has been busy and full of good things.
Seems to me the last time I wrote we were off to Yorkshire for a holiday. It was great and it seems so long ago I won't bore you with all the wonderful photos of the Dales. I did get my piece for the Studio 21 'Chinese Whispers' finished and we had a super exhibition in October.
Here are some of the photos from South Hill Park... Watch this space - we are seeking more venues in the UK at the moment. Our website for more information is http://www.studio21textileart.co.uk/
We will be exploring the elements and principles of design. This will include ideas such as consolidating themes, working in series, the essentials of line, shape, form, colour, texture, abstraction through a series of collage exercises with some art practise, print and digital imagery. For each session there will be a complete set of notes, demonstrations and exercises to follow and there will be some homework.

5 classes will run every 2 weeks on Saturdays
1st , 15th and 29th March, and the 12th and 26th of April. 2014. 9.30am to 4pm

I've been busy working in my new studio and quite excited with some new developments. While sorting through old portfolios I came across some large paintings on paper that might find their way into some new work. It is surprising that over the last 15 years, I have revisited my love of blues and whites with textures in many different series of work. Most have been ice/Arctic inspired, but more recently I have been addressing global warming and sound. The Meltdown work you can see in the New Work part of this blog.
Although working at this time more in black and white, with limited colour, I am sure these images might find their way into some new pieces. Once I have a good jpg of any surface art, there are so many possibilities.
Lately, I have been exploring sound and silence with some pieces that are being developed for a new exhibition by Studio 21 called Chinese Whispers 14-27 October at South Hill Park near Bracknell, Berkshire. http://www.studio21textileart.co.uk/ for details.
Some of the work is a collaboration with other members work, but primarily my work will follow sound 'marks' and inspiration from sound waves. I begin by working in paper with line, paint and imagery to resolve the composition on a small scale, then look at creating surfaces that will be eventually machine stitched. Here are some explorations so far.
Stay tuned also for news of a SALE of quilting materials, books, embroidery cottons and threads at my home in Somerton, Somerset on the 2nd November. I have so much material accumulated over the years, it is the time to take stock (or eliminated some of it)... More information to come.

We're off to the Yorkshire Dales soon for a week (probably in the rain) .... some walking, site seeing
(to Bradford for the Hockney and 'Cloth and Memory' exhibitions), some reading....and hopefully creative time for sketching and sewing.
Well it has been too long since I last wrote - still unpacking boxes and making my Studio a working space. It will be fine but just so many things to find a home for.
We are still discovering wonderful places to visit in Somerset... Porlock Weir, Dunster, and discovering new roads and footpaths in Exmoor. I especially liked the isolation of Porlock Weir, the huge stretch of pebble beach....great textures and subtle colour (and a good pub).
I really could show so many photos from the National Trust gardens we have been exploring in the last few months as well.... Barrington Court, Tintunhull, Montacute House to name a few. But I won't. We all love to take pictures and I have just spent the last 2 days trying to sort the hundreds..or should I say thousands I have. It is compulsive to just keep taking pictures.... I love it.!!!
Festival of Quilts was wonderful last week and I was pleased to be part of
Annabel Rainbow and Laura Kemshall's exhibition 'Through our Hands' with a great group of textile artists. The piece on the left is called 'Pathways' and it first was exhibited with Quilt Art a few years ago, but not seen much in the UK. Still one of my favourite images of endangered forests.

The 'Last Silence' (above) is a very small piece of work which is a starting point for larger work in the future. It is always a shame that the artist statement is not available (except if you have the program in your hand). This piece was inspired by sound... or the lack of sound when I walked onto the frozen Baker Lake in Arctic Canada many years ago. At the time I heard 'nothing' - no birds, planes overhead, ...nothing except for the occasional sound of cracking ice. I was able to find the ice-crack sound waves and replicate them as a dimensional textile piece. The other marks represent the tinitus that I hear now .... no complete silence for me ever again. More work on this theme is being planned for the Studio 21 exhibition in October at South Hill Park, Bracknell. I will be adding it to my latest news soon.

On the left is another new stitched textile inspired by winter flood images and marks from last winter on the levels in Somerset.
Coming to live in a different part of the country did inspire a lot of new photographs this winter and I loved the subtle colours of the trees. It is called "LevelSlice' (far left with detail) Marks on paper were made and combined with black and white images, then heat transferred onto cloth (it is 30cm x 1.2M) with the colour added with machine threads.

Well that's what has been keeping me busy lately. I must try and post more frequently....
Off to the Yorkshire Dales soon..... more photos no doubt... and some sketching too.
NEW COVER - OLD BOOK

Just to let you know that my book Creative Quilts...Inspiration Texture and Stitch published in hardback in 2006, with a red embellished cover (see below) has been reprinted now in softcover. The quilt that Batsford used is from my 'Near North" series and it looks clean and fresh..... BUT it may confuse many who think it is a brand new publication. All the pages inside are the same as before.

For those of you who have not seen this book, it covers embroidery embellishment techniques, surface design and ways to explore creativity in contemporary textile art. Like my other books it includes mini workshops and design classes to try. It is illustrated with my own art quilts and textiles as well as work from many other stitch textile professionals. So, pass on the word that this is the original Creative Quilts book with a 'new look' soft cover.
Settling in nicely to life in Somerset and love our new home. I still have boxes to unpack but have been managing to get really inspired by the landscape in this part of England. So historic as well !!, Very near to the ancient seat of Avalon... King Arthur and all, - Glastonbury and the 'tor', and Wells Cathedral - on the doorstep. The Somerset levels are also very near.... a perfect blend of history, nature and the rural idyll of the west country.
Many of these wide landscapes and big skies have inspired some current work in black and white. The colours are so subtle in winter, yet the shapes of trees are magnificent. Converting images to black and white is often the first thing I do with photos. It is possible then to really see shapes and detail in black and white. Too much colour for me sometimes gets in the way.
Other Textile news....
After a little break from any work for the last couple of months, I am inspired and busy creating new pieces. A recent exhibition called Chinese Whispers by Studio 21 at a stitch textile show in Birmingham at the NEC, gave me a chance to do a piece based on sound and ice. Using some images and marks made to sound, I researched the sound waves of ice breaking and combined the shapes together to create this small piece called "The Last Silence". I am excited about more pieces on this theme and the Studio 21 will be having a large exhibition in October at South Hill Park, Bracknell. We are planning some workshops, and events during that time. Watch this space for more news.
looked at the elements and principles of design. http://www.westdean.org.uk/CollegeChannel/ShortCourses/RequestaBrochure.aspx is the website - then look at the short course 2012/2013 pdf brochure for a wonderful selection of workshops. By working through line, shape, value, colour, pattern and
texture in any one particular theme or focus – dozens of potential ideas can
emerge. Only a small number might be
appropriate to the essence of the subject but by working through several
compositions, it is possible to see a series of pieces begin to emerge. It is always so exciting to see this evolve
in sketchbook form – a little treasured compilation of different ways forward
for new work. Here is a selection of work done in class – I am very
excited about this class and will teaching it again soon.

Until this ‘exchange’ of contracts happens you are in ‘limbo’. Thankfully we had started to pack several
weeks ago. Very necessary with all of my
art and textiles and 22 years of ‘life’ accumulated in Binfield, Berkshire. I have given, donated, parted with as much as
I can and there are still more and more boxes to fill. It seems endless. I definitely wouldn’t want to do this too often.

My plan in the new year is to introduce an online 'Design Essentials' course (design and composition for stitched textiles) in 10-12 instalments - with homework involved. There will be one or two 'face to face' visits and tutorials (when possible) during the program, but for the most part it
will include online presentations with coursework as pdf files which will, with your own design and composition exercises create a wonderful resource for future
stitched textile work. The course will
include some of the feature workshops and classes in my latest book, taken further with
more possibilities. I am very excited

Team GB (and I am entitled to cheer for Britain after 35 years living here), did fantastically well and worth all of the accolades and gold medals for all of their years of hard work. Here are a few photos - the dockside and 'Murphy's' - a great place for Lobster ( and oh .... did I have lobster) with my good friend Maggie Vanderweit who was also teaching for CQA.

In July I had the opportunity to teach a summerschool for Sian Martin's Distance Learning program at Urchfont. I hadn't been to this wonderful country house adult education centre in Wiltshire for many years and it was wonderful to be back again. The class was about Digital Imagery in Stitched textiles and we learned about using personal themed images as a starting point for not only future design, but how to include transferred sections into contemporary work. Sadly, as the home and gardens are being sold in September, 'Urchfont' as we have known it over the years (stitched textile classes in adult education by some of the best embroiderers in the country) will no longer exist, but the memories, inspiration and creativity that came from these walls will be remembered for years to come. Early this year was the proof stages of the new book 'Connecting Design to Stitch' and when it finally got to the printer, I could concentrate on other teaching and textile commitments. So, apologies for not updating this site.
In March I visited Puglia, Italy at the Masseria for Twisted Thread teaching 'Design to Stitch' to a great group of ladies from the UK, Israel and Italy. We visited Polignano a Mer, a wonderful seaside town, - and Alberobello a world heritage site full of historic and regional buildings. The 'Truilli' houses in the whole town were an amazing site. Do you see the blue skies? The light was wonderful and I wish I could have brought some of that weather home with me to the UK.
It was great to take photos again and what a wealth of different colours and textures to choose from. The spring blossom was a bonus.
A September trip to Ontario visiting family with side trips to Cape Cod, Princton NJ and Maryland to see friends has kept my computer busy with hundreds of photos. So many, I just bought a 2TB hard drive to keep up. Many of the images I wanted to use for small stitch compositions.

The biggest news is writing a new book ' Connecting Design to Stitch' (Batsford - August 2012) and it has been my main focus for the last 2-3 months. It will address design and composition through the eyes of a stitched textile maker- not just for contemporary quilters but embroiderers or anyone who loves fibre with mixed media and stitch. Similar to Connecting Art to Stitch, it will be full of wonderful pieces of work from international art quilters and embroiderers, composition collage exercises and design workshops. Hopefully, something for everyone. I will be at the Festival of Quilts in August (the NEC in Birmingham) with a small stand to introduce the book, so if you are in the UK and planning to attend, please come and see me.

One of the main sources of inspiration this time has been images from the Jurassic coast in Dorset - that 135 km stretch of ancient coastline. Cliffs, beaches, boats and the sea from West Bay to Lyme Regis feature often, and of course the classic fossil shape - the 'spiral' as it relates to the 'golden mean' - perfect proportion in nature. The 'rule of thirds' a simple version of this, helps us to practise good composition in both fine art and wall hung stitched textiles.

Here is a glimpse some of the new work that will appear. Inspiration throughout the book will come from photo images based on a theme, world textiles, architecture, the landscape, nature and many more subjects of interest.
The fibre-art, stitched textile group, Studio21 have been going strong since 1997 and we are all Stitched Textile Diploma graduates from the Windsor School of Textile Arts, over the years. We have an exhibition called 'Continuum...A Sense of Place' on stand A58, so if you are reading this, and will be at the show, please drop in. There is an interactive area where we are encouraging visitors to apply fabric and stitch marks by hand onto a very long piece of cloth that began at 40m in length and is still growing. By Sunday, when the exhibition finishes it will be fantastic. Here are some quick photos I have taken so far. More 'interactive' photos are on www.studio21textileart.co.uk
Another highlight for me was the opportunity to spend time in the Art Quilt category and there were some amazing pieces. (see below).
The winning quilt by Janneke de Vries-Bodzinga from the Netherlands was breathtaking, and other strong pieces included work by C June Barnes, Linda Barlow, Maggie Barber, Turid Tonnessen, Sheena Norquay, Janet Twinn, Hilary Beattie, Jane Ashe and Carole Belfield to name only a few.
(I hope the makers don't mind me sharing some of their work). I will be visiting the Festival again tomorrow when I will have the chance to see many more of the competition quilts and other textile galleries.
Teaching a one day class on Digital Imagery in Stitched Textiles kept me busy yesterday. Students brought a personal theme with black and white and colour imagery that was painted and collaged together. A short basic lesson in Photoshop Elements explained how their collage photos were edited before printing on t-shirt papers. The final heat transferred cloth could then be used as a fabric for stitch in a future piece of work.
Here are a few of the collages that were done. Thanks to students whose work is shown.
I have been busy writing a new book and it is taking shape nicely. It will be called 'Connecting Design to Stitch' - how we can find confidence in design and composition decisions in textile art.
It certainly has been a challenge - keeping the mix of a basic knowledge of the principles and elements, design styles to inspire, finding good composition and including a wide selection of artist's work. I did have a chance to go for a holiday to the Dordogne this month. It was great to do some writing in the quiet of a peaceful cottage in the country, as well as be inspired by so much colour, pattern and textures of the weekly markets and the towns nearby. You will see many of my photos as starting points for pattern and design exercises in the new book. Despite the cool and sometimes wet weather in Beaumont-en-Perigord, it was a great break. Here are some of the wonderful views and textures nearby - I came home with so many wonderful images to inspire the book - design and composition exercises with line, shape, pattern, texture and colour.
Our exhibition is called 'Continuum...a sense of place'. Most of the space will be our exhibition but we also have an interactive section where we hope people will join in, adding to a long thin landscape piece with their own inspiration. Join us if you are at the show.
Understanding the life that convicts had when they arrived in Tasmania over 100 years ago was quite a revelation. Many of the buildings are derelict now, but set in the most beautiful scenery you could imagine. It was hard to comprehend what life was like for many who found themselves so far away, banished for petty crimes in England. It is certainly worth a visit if you are visiting Hobart in the future. Very inspirational. We workded with painted papers, created collages based on our theme, sometimes inspired by modern artist's work, then stitched them together in a mixed media way (fabric that included papers and embellishment). Image transfer was included and also a little play with disperse transfer dyes. They also finished a bound book which included more of their drawings and paintings and collage composition as a starting point for future work. Here is a view of the final work on show and some detailed photos of only some of the wonderful work done. My thanks to the ladies for allowing me to show their work and I am sorry I couldn't include everyone's pieces.
